Goose Hunting Rifle, .22 Winchester Automatic, date: 1911.Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Cody, WY. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Howard W. Adkins.
I’m getting into the Christmas spirit, so I wanted to share a unique goose hunting rifle in the Cody Firearms Museum Collection. It’s a Winchester Model 1903 Semi-Automatic Rifle in .22 caliber, but this particular gun has been modified a bit.
The standard 1903 had a 10-round tubular magazine in the buttstock. However, this firearm has been fixed with an enlarged capacity magazine. The original magazine was replaced with a rotating 45 round magazine. The firearm was also fixed with a suppressor. The gun was intended for commercial goose hunting.
The 1903 was an early form of semi-automatic rifle and therefore, innovative for its day. But add an extended magazine and a suppressor and that makes for a pretty cool rifle for getting a Christmas goose…or 45.
